Establish and Document the Application Boundary - Application Management Best Practices
Establish and Document the Application Boundary
(Chapter 60 of Application Management Best Practices)
Executive Summary: Chapter Overview
IF4ITThe Bottom Line
Core Concepts
| Concept | Definition & Strategic Role |
|---|---|
| Application Boundary in Practice | The documented line between what belongs to the Application (its controlled technical components, functions, and services) and everything it merely interacts with. It tells Release teams precisely what they must build, test, and deploy, and what they must coordinate with others. |
| Boundary Context Diagram | A diagram in the Architecture and Design section showing what is inside and outside the Application Boundary, with each external element linked to its own Application or System record. It makes ownership and interaction points understandable at a glance. |
| Ambiguous Boundary Cases | Elements such as shared databases, shared authentication services, and reporting extracts whose ownership is not obvious. They must be resolved deliberately during design, with the reasoning recorded, which settles recurring arguments about ownership once and for all. |
Quick Q&A
Question: What should be listed when establishing what lies inside an Application Boundary?
Question: Which Release events should trigger a fresh look at the Application Boundary?

This chapter explains how to establish and document the Application Boundary in practice. The concept is defined in the chapter “What Is an Application Boundary?”
Establish the Application Boundary
During design, decide with the IT Application Owner and Enterprise Architecture what is inside the Application and what is outside it:
List the technical components the Application controls, such as its code modules, databases, queues, scheduled jobs, and configuration.
List the functions and services that belong to the Application.
Identify everything outside the boundary that the Application interacts with, including other Applications, shared platforms, and external Systems.
Resolve ambiguous cases deliberately, for example shared databases, shared authentication services, and reporting extracts, and record the reasoning.
Revisit the boundary whenever a Release splits, merges, or extracts parts of the Application, or moves responsibility for a component to or from another Application.
Document and Share the Application Boundary
Record the boundary in the Architecture and Design section of the documentation, preferably with a context diagram showing what is inside and what is outside, and link each external element to its own Application or System record.

Remember to review the boundary with every Release.
Best Practice: Establish and Document the Application Boundary
It is a best practice to both establish and document the solution for where an Application begins and ends: decide deliberately what lies inside its boundary and what lies outside, record the boundary with a context diagram and the reasoning for ambiguous cases, and revisit it with every Release.
Benefits: A documented boundary settles, once and for all, the recurring arguments about which team owns a shared component or which Application a defect belongs to. It also tells Release teams precisely what they must build, test, and deploy, and what they must coordinate with others.
