Enterprise Architecture Value Model
Chapter 13. Understand what is required to advance from Level 1 to Level 2
Advancing from Level 1 to Level 2 requires your architecture function to shift from reactive to proactive engagement — from waiting for programs to come to review gates to actively inserting architecture into delivery programs at the earliest point where architectural decisions are being made. As the IT leader, your role in this transition is to negotiate a different operating model with delivery leadership: one in which architecture is invited into programs early, participates continuously rather than episodically, and is given enough context to provide advice that is informed by specific program realities rather than only by abstract standards.
This is primarily an engagement model change, not a staffing change. It requires architects who are comfortable operating in delivery environments and who have earned enough technical credibility with delivery teams to be heard in rooms where delivery timelines and budget pressure create resistance to architectural guidance. Your Chief Architect is responsible for developing and deploying that capability within the team.
