Release Management Best Practices

Overview

The master SDLC (Intake and Strategizing → Research and Prototyping → Planning → Requirements Capture → Design → Implementation/Build → SIT → UAT → PROD → Post-Mortem and Closing) is a customizable baseline, not a fixed rule. Not every SDLC phase has a corresponding Environment: Planning, Requirements Capture, Design, and Post-Mortem and Closing are activity-only phases with no deployment target; Development, SIT, UAT, and Production (and, for richer profiles, Research, Training, and Pre-Production) are the phases that correspond to actual, deployable Environments.

Example Environment sets, by Asset profile: DEV, SIT, PROD; DEV, PROD; DEV, SIT, UAT, PROD; or RES, DEV, SIT, UAT, TRN, PREP, PROD. A low-risk Asset might use a reduced SDLC of Intake & Strategy → Planning → Requirements → Design → Implementation/Build → Development (DEV) → Production (PROD) → Post-Mortem & Closing — only 2 Environments.

Releases progress sequentially, left to right, through whichever Environments were selected for that Asset, via Deployments at each, subject to Readiness Gates at each. Release Iterations are the feedback loop: a rejection at any Environment sends work back to Development/Engineering only, producing a new Iteration that re-attempts the same left-to-right progression.

Best Practice

Define, for each Asset/Product/Service, which SDLC phases and corresponding Environments are actually relevant, scaled to its Risk Classification — rather than forcing every Asset through every possible Environment regardless of need.

Benefit(s)

• Avoids wasted governance/testing overhead for low-risk Assets while preserving full rigor for higher-risk ones.

• Keeps SDLC/Environment alignment meaningful rather than a one-size-fits-all checkbox exercise.
