Core Concepts
| Concept | Definition & Strategic Role |
|---|---|
| Deployment | The execution unit within a single Environment. |
| Deployment Retry | A repeated attempt of the same Change Set/Iteration for execution reasons. |
| Release Iteration | A new Change Set produced after a functional/quality rejection. |
Quick Q&A
Question: If a Deployment fails and is retried, is that a new Release?
Question: Why might an Environment need multiple Deployment attempts?

Overview
A Release is the higher-order governance construct, coordinated and sequenced across the full Environment journey. A Deployment is the discrete execution unit within a single Environment — installing, configuring, instantiating, and running the Release’s Change Set and its enablers. The relationship is one-to-many at two levels: a Release requires a minimum of one Deployment per Environment, and any given Environment often requires multiple Deployment attempts to iron out issues and prove repeatability before being trusted in the next Environment, ultimately Production.

Strive to reduce the number of Deployments for a given Release in each Environment. Iteration is expected and often necessary, but an unusually high Deployment count in an Environment is a readiness and risk signal Release Management should watch — not simply tolerate as background noise.
Benefit(s)
- May indicate an unstable Deployment procedure, insufficient lower-Environment parity, or a Release that isn’t actually ready to advance — surfacing this early avoids a costly surprise at Production.
