Service queues and backlogs are the managed collections of Service Records, Tickets, tasks, incidents, requests, approvals, events, or fulfillment activities waiting for action. They may exist in a Help Desk or Service Desk tool, workflow platform, shared mailbox, project tool, automation queue, monitoring system, vendor portal, or other system of record. Regardless of where the queue exists, it should be actively managed.
A queue is not just a list of open tickets. It is an operational control point for understanding demand, work in progress, aging work, blocked work, misrouted work, priority conflicts, fulfillment capacity, and service risk. A backlog is not automatically bad. Some backlog may be normal when demand exceeds immediate capacity or when work is scheduled for future action.
