Software Technologies Inventory and Attributes

The relationship between the Software Technologies Inventory and the Vendors Inventory is one of consumption. Each commercially supplied technology originates with a vendor, and this inventory references that vendor rather than restating vendor data. The Vendors Inventory is authoritative for vendor identity, viability, risk posture, contractual relationship, and everything else that is a property of the supplier rather than of any one product it supplies. This inventory is authoritative for the technology itself. Open source technologies invert the pattern: they have no vendor, but they do have a governing community or foundation, and this inventory records that explicitly so the absence of a vendor is not mistaken for an absence of support.

The connecting attributes are the Supplying Vendor attribute, which appears in two forms deliberately. In the Vendor and Supplier Attributes category it records the descriptive fact — which vendor supplies this technology — while in the Relationship Attributes category it is expressed as a derived graph edge that supports traversal and aggregate analysis. Governing Community or Foundation carries the open source counterpart. Vendor Support Tier and Support Contract Reference record what the enterprise is entitled to under the arrangement, and Vendor Viability Assessment is derived from the Vendors Inventory rather than judged independently here.

The governance value is visibility across a supplier relationship rather than one product at a time. Well governed, the enterprise can see every technology a given vendor supplies, assess what a vendor failure or acquisition would reach, negotiate from a complete picture of what it already buys, and identify where supplier concentration has quietly become a systemic exposure. For open source, the same structure surfaces a risk enterprises rarely assess at all — a technology whose governing community has stopped releasing is as exposed as one whose vendor has wound down, and only an explicitly recorded community makes that visible. Without the relationship, vendor conversations happen per contract and per renewal, with no one able to see the whole.
