Enterprise Architecture. Enterprise Architecture cannot design a target state for a technology estate it cannot enumerate. This inventory tells Enterprise Architecture which technologies are actually in use, at which versions, and beneath which applications — the difference between a roadmap grounded in the current state and one drawn from assumption. Standards work depends on it directly: an architect cannot declare a preferred message broker or a sanctioned runtime without knowing what is already deployed and what it would cost to converge. Because Enterprise Architecture governs the Enterprise Model, this inventory is also its record of the technology layer within it.
Application Portfolio Management. The connection to Application Portfolio Management is indirect but consequential. Applications are not software technologies, and Application Portfolio Management does not govern this inventory — but nearly every application decision it makes is constrained by the technologies beneath them. An application cannot be modernized independently of the database engine it was built against, cannot be assessed for risk without knowing whether its runtime is past end of support, and cannot be retired cleanly without accounting for the technologies it leaves stranded. Without this inventory, Application Portfolio Management assesses applications while blind to the technology exposure that determines much of their real cost and risk.
Technology Portfolio Management. Technology Portfolio Management depends on this inventory more directly than any other discipline, because this inventory is the technology portfolio’s record. Rationalization requires knowing where the enterprise runs four technologies that do one job. Currency management requires knowing which technologies are approaching end of support and how much sits on top of them. Investment decisions require knowing what is deployed, who owns it, and what it costs. Technology Portfolio Management without this inventory is portfolio management without a portfolio.
The Enterprise Model. Each registered software technology is a node in the Enterprise Model, and its governed relationships are edges — to the applications built on it, the vendors that supply it, the data it manages, the integrations it carries, and the AI agents that run within it. Those edges make questions answerable that no single inventory can answer alone: which regulated business capabilities depend on a technology whose support ends next quarter, which vendors sit behind a given application’s entire technology stack, or which AI agents run on a machine learning framework with a newly disclosed vulnerability. The technology layer is where much of the enterprise’s dependency structure actually lives, so a well-governed instance of this inventory materially increases what the whole model can reason about.
