Database platforms, storage services, and messaging technologies are not merely infrastructure — they are custodians of organizational data. A database technology that hosts personally identifiable data is subject to privacy regulations that affect how it can be retired and what happens to the data it holds when it is. A storage technology that is the authoritative host for a critical enterprise dataset cannot be retired without a data migration plan that preserves accessibility for downstream consumers. Connect every technology in the Technologies Inventory — particularly Database and Data Management Platforms, storage services, and messaging technologies — to the data assets in the Data and Information Assets Inventories that it stores or processes. For each connection, capture the data asset name, its classification, the regulatory frameworks that apply, and any residency requirements. Use this mapping as a mandatory input to technology retirement planning — no technology should be decommissioned without a data disposition plan addressing every data asset it hosts.
